For those of you who play The Commuter Quiz each day and may have missed the answer, here's the question: Americans eat 387 million pounds of the German staple per year? Sauerkraut (1.25 pounds per person) * that's a lot of any food!
I'm a proud Mom and God Mother: Check out my son Hank on guitar and vocals and my Godson Ryan on Drums along with Ryans Dad Pat, brother Collin and friend Joe playing the Lansing City Market.
2010 has been my year to really get off my couch and get moving, lose weight and just feel better overall!
I started out the year using the START program from the American Heart Association www.americanheart.org and it really got me started exercising and taking better care of myself. Then I spent 13 weeks working with personal trainer Deb Popp at the Michigan Athletic Club as part of the MAC fitness challenge. What a difference! The pictures below are my before and after and looking at them it's hard to really tell the difference, but it's really huge. Over 7 inches, almost 10 lbs and I'm so much stronger and healthier. I can push right through Fibromyalgia flare ups and I rarely have to use my inhaler for asthma. I didn't believe it was really possible but Deb showed me how I could always find a fun way to exercise, it's o.k. to push past what I thought was my limit and that there is always time to exercise. I now walk almost every day, and I do pilates and yoga on a regular basis and I plan to continue with the weight training. I can now work in my garden like I did 10 years ago, I can run and play with my granddaughter and with another one on the way, I'm going to need that extra energy and strength. Thanks Deb!
update 7/21/10: I'm continuing to lose weight since the work with Deb helped to change my metabolism, so as long as I keep eating right and keep moving I keep losing! I've discovered paddle boating during my lunch hour at Hawk Island and Yoga at the Y, plus walking whenever I get a chance.

If your looking for ways to burn calories you can do that while doing housework several people have asked for my homemade window cleaner recipe This is the recipe that I got online and I just eyeball the amounts. I don't think I used anywhere near 1/2 cup of ammonia or 1 pint of rubbing alcohol, I think I used 1 bottle of rubbing alcohol and washed the insides of all my downstairs windows. So you can go easy on the amounts and save even more money and there's no streaks, that's the beauty of it! Don't forget you can burn 153 calories for every 1/2 hour spent washing windows. Enjoy and let the sun shine in!
Ingredients:
1/2 cup ammonia
1 pint rubbing alcohol
Add enough additional water to make 1 gallon
I was just talking about this on air, it's really a very interesting and uplifting look at Michigan as a place to live. There are really good things going on! check it out: http://www.buymichigannow.com/
You may have noticed a link on the bottom of our front page to Savings Angel. I've been using Savingsangel.com for over a year now and I'm still saving money. One of the cool things is when you can save while buying items in bulk. Some weeks I only have to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. for example I got such a good deal between sale prices and coupons on laundry soap that I won't have to buy any until next year. I've been able to do the same with shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and other items. I did have to come up with an orginizational plan to store the items, but in the long run I've saved alot of time and money.
This is laugh out loud funny...enjoy!!!
This is at my house on Saturday June 20th, 2009.
My Garden June 2010
I'm still working in the garden. Above is a picture I took during a driving rainstorm last Spring, it struck me as so calm and pretty. Part of my urban prairie. On the right is pretty much the same picture from 2010. If you look in the back you can see that the vegetable garden is coming along. We now have 16 boxes built and 4 families working our urban farm. Below are a few more garden pictures.
